Gutter repair and reattachment

Getting loose, leaking and storm-bent gutters back on the house and draining the right way.

Gutter repair and reattachment fixes gutters that are basically sound but failing in spots: runs pulling off the fascia, corners and end caps that drip, sections bent by limbs or ladders, and downspouts that have come apart. For Fredericksburg-area homeowners, it's the right fix when replacing everything would be overkill.

Common repairs

  • Replacing spikes or loose hangers with screw-in hidden hangers
  • Re-pitching runs that hold water
  • Resealing or replacing leaking corners, end caps and outlets
  • Swapping out a crushed or torn section
  • Replacing rotted fascia boards and re-hanging the gutter
  • Re-connecting downspouts, elbows and straps

Signs you need a repair

  • A gap between the gutter and the fascia
  • Drips at the same joint after every rain
  • Water standing in the gutter days after a storm
  • Peeling paint or stains on fascia and siding
  • A downspout lying in the yard

Why it happens around Fredericksburg

Gutters loaded with wet leaves are heavy, and the region's snow, about 16 inches a year on average according to the National Park Service, adds weight some winters. Builder-installed gutters were often hung with fasteners that loosen over time. Wooded lots mean falling limbs in storms. Once a gutter tips forward or a joint opens, water runs behind it and starts working on the fascia.

What affects the cost?

  • How many spots need work
  • Whether fascia boards behind the gutter are rotted
  • Height of the wall and roof access
  • Matching color and profile for replacement sections

Repair or replace?

Repair makes sense when the gutters are the right size and failing in a few places. When leaks, sags and loose sections are all around the house, new gutters usually cost less in the long run than a string of repairs.

Common questions

Why do gutters pull away from the house?

Usually the fasteners loosened, the wood behind them softened, or the gutter got heavy with wet debris, ice or snow. Screw-in hangers into solid wood are the usual fix.

Can a leaking corner be fixed without replacing the gutter?

Often. Cleaning and resealing the joint, or replacing the corner piece, stops many leaks.

What if a limb tore the gutter off in a storm?

Keep people out from under any hanging section and call. The installer can tell whether it can be re-hung or needs a new section.
